July 9, 2010 – Osteosarcoma CONFIRMED in Denali

Denali has mostly been sleeping ever since I took her fentinyl patch off.  She’ll want to go out 1-3 times a day for potty breaks.  I’m hoping she’s just healing and this is the medication.  From what I’ve read of other posts, them sleeping a lot after the amputation surgery is pretty normal and it’s just been over a week.

She continues to ‘bunny hop’ and I have not caught her trying to ‘stand’ proper lately.

I’m sorry to hear about the final diagnosis… 🙁

Denali definitely needs to get plenty of rest to recover from the big surgery… plus she’s on pain meds, too… So, it all sounds normal so far.

My Jake had his ‘bunny hop’ up until he passed… so it may never go away… All depends on the dog, I think.

Give your sweetie a big hug and kiss from me!!

Hi Denali and family

Denali caught my eye because Pyrenees are BeautifuL and my Pup, Tazzie, was a Pyre x Collie cross – a really crazy dog he was.

Sleeping a lot in the first week, or two or three . . . is normal for some dogs. Others start to romp as of Day 1. Tazzie was in the first group. He imitated a block of cement for about 2 to 3 weeks, only budging about once per day to pee and poo. So if Denali wants to go outside more than that, it sounds good to me.

But things did turn around and by week four, he was pretty happy and lively. By week 5 and on, I’d say he was as happy as ever, possibly more because of all the attention directed his way. We spent lots of time swimming and at the dog parks.

It also took Tazzie a while to learn the tripawd hop. He tried a few variations along the way. It turned out he had pretty bad hips, but we did not know. That might have been one thing that slowed his recovery, but it was not an issue once he was back on his feet.

Good Luck and Keep us posted on Denali!

I’m sorry to hear about the diagnosis. We’ll keep fingers and paws crossed that Denali will beat the odds, though. Lots of rest is just what your beautiful girl needs. Holly rested lots through the first 2 weeks… give her lots of love. Holly just had a “sending Denali good wishes” treat in her honor!

Sending hugs,
Holly, Zuzu and Susan

Sorry to hear that Denali’s diagnosis is confirmed now. No matter how prepared you are you still hope deep down that it’s a false alarm. Denali wanting to sleep a lot is very normal. I remember Mackenzie at times was listless and it really concerned me but then she pulled through it and as the days wore on she got more energy. But it was a very slow build. Like many of us have said, it really does take a good 2 weeks minimum to get through this initial recovery and then once you take her off the meds you’ll start to see some really good improvements.

Happy 1 Week Ampuversary! Hopefully you’re through the worst part of this recovery and before you know it, you’ll see Denali getting back to her normal self. Best of luck with everything! Keeping our paws crossed that Denali continues to do well.

Sorry about the positive diagnosis of osteosarcoma for Denali. I guess the only positive is that now you know what you’re dealing with.

Catie did a lot of sleeping and had quite a bit of lethargy too during the recovery period. It was indeed a slow build to pre-surgery activity – which, to be honest, for Catie was pretty low-key even before cancer.

Sending many healing wishes to Denali. This recovery period will pass.

So sorry to hear about Denali’s diagnosis. Sending positive thoughts to her, and you too. The first couple of weeks are tough, both physicially & emotionally. You constantly worry if they are pain, if they are healing, and looking for signs that anything is wrong. Ruby was fairly mobile, but had a difficult time getting comfortable. Hopefully, with Denali’srest will come quicker healing for her.

Hang in there,
Kim
